BABBLE

The beeping and buzzing of technology, noisy traffic, the incessant shouting of social media – it never shuts up. Caught in this constant babble, how do we find stillness?

‘Babble’ brings dynamic physicality, inventive imagery, a multi-layered musical soundscape, and a formidable cast of 25 young South Auckland voices to the Māngere Arts Centre stage. Drawing on their own unique experiences and stories, the performers take us on an uplifting journey through the many interruptions of modern life.

Directed by: Carla Martell & Scotty Cotter
Assistant Director: Ebony Andrew

TE WHARE KAPUA
The Cloud House

Written by: Miriama McDowell
Directed by: Sam Scott

Waewae kai kapua: Adventurous person, risk-taker, one with fanciful ideas, dreamer. Inspired by the greatness of explorers and dreamers, Massive’s second emerging artists’ production for 2020 is written by longtime Massive collaborator Miriama McDowell.

As Miriama prepares her first draft, she writes about what is exciting her:

"I want to write a story about a house that has had many people pass through and around it, over many generations. I love walking through my own house late at night and listening to the floors creek. It reminds me of the spine of an old man, creaking with the weight of his life. My house was originally a grocery warehouse, then a dental studio, now an apartment that holds three wahine Māori. I wish it could tell me what it has seen.”

massive Making

Massive Theatre Company specialises in teaching devising processes for theatre making, in which students learn how to create work using their own relevant and meaningful content. If you are interested in other areas of theatre craft and processes, we will design a workshop to suit.

Contact us for further information or to register your interest in Massive Making.

Massive Making is a bespoke workshop, designed specifically for you and your students.

The Massive Making package includes individualised pre-workshop consultations (by phone, Skype or in person), supporting material, workshop delivery and follow up.

We encourage at least a one day workshop, but will design a workshop for anywhere between two hours and a week in length.

Even though Massive is based in Auckland, we also travel nationally and internationally to deliver our workshops. Please do still get in touch if you are outside of Auckland.

Our students were able to experience true ‘authenticity’ in the approach, nature and outcomes from their work. The material generated, and processes followed, opened our students’ eyes up to what a day in the life of performer/actor/theatre maker really involves out the industry and gave them the hunger to shift their commitment and impulses within their own work to a new level of real heart and impact.

massive Teacher workshopS

Our teacher workshops are run by Sam Scott, MNZM, founder and Artistic Director of Massive Company. With 33 years’ teaching and directing experience, Sam is one of New Zealand’s leaders in developing arts practitioners. Specialising in working with emerging artists aged 14-25, Sam cares deeply about her workshop participants and the content of the classes she teaches.

NAPIER: November 15
TAURANGA:
November 19
DUNEDIN:
November 21
AUCKLAND:
November 22

These workshops are designed for teachers of young people, but are also perfect for theatre practitioners with a particular interest in devising.

The workshop will focus on processes you can use to make vibrant, bold, relevant theatre pieces with your students.

Throughout the workshop, Sam will clearly explain the thinking and philosophy behind everything she does, so you have a pedagogical content knowledge of the work.

Fee: $120 + GST.  Concessions are available on a case by case basis. Please apply on the registration form.

This fee covers the workshop, individualised support, teacher notes and access to videos and education packs.

WHAT PARTICIPANTS SAY

“This is the best Professional Development I access each year, and I always come away inspired and excited to create new content for my students. Sam is an amazing facilitator who is genuinely interested in developing each teacher’s skills, and is so open with her resources.”
“A Massive Company workshop will reignite your own creative ‘fighting spirit,’ so that you can encourage the rangatahi in your classes to do the same.”
“Generating performance material, using the carefully scaffolded structures that Sam with Massive Theatre advocates, makes the process readily accessible for the classroom teacher to use or adapt. The strategies appear deceptively simplistic whilst at the same time resonate with depth and nuance.”
“It’s so exciting to get new and different ideas for working with teenagers in the performing arts. I left the Massive workshop excited to go back to work and try new ideas, especially for boys in my year 9 class. Sam Scott has been inspiring me for over a decade and I highly, highly recommend attending if you can!”
